This is one I did today. This one is for me since I wrote my horse, Abbey’s name on the back and attached the attribute she has taught me in the 18 yrs we’ve been together! She is my fiery red head so I enjoyed spicing it up with some splashes of red and purple wire!
I also added another feature to my website. I have an oil painting up for auction Here: http://www.suesteinerpetportraits.com/art-helping-rescues/online-store/horse-dog-cat-gifts/auctions/

Ask any animal lover and they will tell you one of their favorite subjects to photograph is their pets or horses. With digital ‘point and shoot’ cameras so readily available this can be a fun hobby. Learning how to improve your photos and get great photos of your pet or horse is not hard with a few ‘how to’ tips. Let me show you how to improve your photography skills!
As a pet portrait artist I often see pet photos that could be improved to make a great picture! These tips apply for people wanting to create good photos and also for people wanting to memorialize a pet in an oil painting.
Natural Light is best! Colors sparkle and shadows create interest! Turn your flash off. Zoom in on your subject.
Use a digital camera. Have the setting on the largest sized file possible. The file should be at least 1000 x 1000 on up.
Get on eye level with the pet. Lots of times I get photos that are distorted because the camera view is looking down on the pet and the pet is crouching. A happy dog looking up as if to a treat can be a fun composition but also take some eye level shots . Avoid the crouching, submissive looking dog. Pay attention to the animals body language. You want the pet to appear relaxed, happy and eager.
Have the pets face/ body fill the frame. Avoid too much background. Horse or working dog photos can be an exception here if you want more of a scenery/landscape/ action shot with the horse or working dog as the subject in a specific location. For the typical portrait though have the face and shoulders fill as much of the camera frame as possible and still be in focus.
Take the photo in natural light . I can’t emphasize this enough. Turn your flash off. If you are photographing your horse barn and stall photos usually are too poor quality to make into a portrait unless there is dramatic natural light on the face.
Relax! Sit down and expect this to take some time. Animal sense when we are rushed. Have a camera card with lots of room – you can always delete the bad photos- which you will have plenty of! Natural, relaxed poses are best. A good option is to have one person play with the dog or cat with their favorite toy and have another take photos (down on their level). Cats do like to perch so an upward view in good natural light is an exception. Beware of background lighting with cats- they often like to pose by windows so if you can position yourself so not to have just a dark cat silhouette with a light window as a background. The true colors and features of the pet get washed out and are too hard to see in that type of photo.
Have the animal looking at you- use treats or toys to get an alert, interested expression. Grazing horses are beautiful in a landscape painting but make poor references for portraits.
If the portrait will include two or more animals be sure to have a photo of them together (full body) to show size relationship.
Copyrighted photos can not be used for references unless the photographer gives permission for them to be used that way. Even professional photos you have paid for still retain the photographers copyrights as does any original art.
If these tips are too late because you’ve lost a beloved pet or horse all is not lost. A n original oil painting portrait can be painted especially for you. I spend some time talking with you about your pet’s personality and favorite activities. I usually ask for an emotion or feeling they’d like conveyed in the painting and think of that as I paint. Its amazing how the emotion then just seems to flow on to the canvas! An original oil painting makes for a very special gift!

I took a few weeks off when my mom got sick and the kids were first out of school to take care of some things at home. I went longer without painting than I have since I started painting! I missed it terribly but at the same time painting and art for me are so engrossing it is hard for me to switch gears when I get into painting so it was a good thing for me to do so I could take care of some family needs.
Thankfully my mom is doing well and things are well at home. The horses are sleek and happy. My kids still are keeping me busy but that’s to be expected!
I will share with you a slide show here of new art that will soon be up for sale. I need to get my web site spruced up– that’s next!
Take care and hope your summer is going well!

I got my professional start by painting farm animal murals at a well know, busy store in Kidron, Ohio called Lehman’s. I live in Ohio Amish Country and this store is a favorite spot for toursits as well as the Amish. It is unique to say the least. You have to see it to know what I am talking about!~ Anyways I am very proud to have made a permanent stamp on their walls and buildings with many life sized farm animal and horse murals. I will share a few here but encourage you to see them in person and enjoy the whole experience if you are ever out this way!

This last one is not a mural but an oil painting I painted in 2009. I have done several paintings that would fit into a southwest or cowboy theme.
Spring is here and that means TIME to RIDE!!
Chomping at the bit is right! Just got back from the Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio which signifies the official start of prime riding time! Or at least that is what I am always hoping will happen! Life, work and family obligations occasionally disrupt the riding schedule but [...]

Chomping at the bit is right! Just got back from the Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio which signifies the official start of prime riding time! Or at least that is what I am always hoping will happen! Life, work and family obligations occasionally disrupt the riding schedule but I still chomp at the bit to ride and keep trying!
I also included the artwork and photo above so you can see a reference photo and the artwork that came from it. My goal is never merely to copy a photo and turn it into a painting but to give everything my own artistic twist. I can paint ‘realistic’ and have made that my goal at times but more often now I strive for color and rhythm and ’life’. Here are some of my favorites.
In addition to animals I love painting people. Here is a sampling of some of my figurative and portrait oil paintings and mixed media.

I am so excited to be a regular contributor to a really fantastic online animal magazine, CreaturesAll. It is all the things I love wrapped up in a visually pleasing, entertaining package! It is personal, heartwarming and funny! In my column, A Brush with Life, I will be highlighting a painting that was inspired by a wall post photo or story submitted on my facebook page here http://www.facebook.com/pages/Save-a-Face-Project-helping-Rescues/126592364031336 by a fan. Who doesn’t like to read the happy stories that come from helping animals? I love how we think we are helping them but so often it is the other way around! I don’t know about you but I need to hear that side of things more often! Social networking is a wonderful thing and is being used in amazing ways to help animals in need of rescuing but the down side is I sometimes feel blasted with so much need. I sometimes have to focus on the good that does happen so I can feel energized to keep helping. I think thats where this magazine will be so helpful. I believe you will find it uplifting and encouraging! I try to do the same with my art.
Please visit http://www.creaturesall.com to read more about this magazine and also stop by here to read my first column that tells a truly heartwarming story about a horse that Julie Copper of http://www.heresyhorses.com bought this horse from the kill buyers and his special role now teaching his young rider the joy of horses!
Here’s is a link to the story about King and Julie. https://acrobat.com/#d=3PJLbfU70oedHrwVIn0TdQ
As soon as I finish writing this I am heading to my studio to finish Julie’s oil painting. I am selling a special, large cowgirl themed painting to help raise funds to save more horses like King.
